Beau

“I’ll take one last question.” I point to Betty, the reporter in the polyester suit from the newspaper. This press conference has run longer than expected, and I pray that she’ll take it easy on me.

“This question is on behalf of all of the female voters, Beau. You were spotted having lunch yesterday with a woman. We’d like to know, will she be checking the box next to your name on Election Day? If so, does this mean you’ll be turning in your bachelor card?” She shoots me a look that says, I had to ask. Of course she had to go there. She’s looking for a story, but I’m not about to give her one.

“Well, Betty, to be perfectly honest, it’s my hope that you will all be checking the box next to my name come Election Day.” Laughter erupts from the crowd, as I give them all my signature smile. “Have a great evening, everyone.”

One more wave, and then I take the opportunity to collect my notes and exit the stage as quickly as possible.

I’m shaking hands with voters when I spot my father approaching from across the room. He stops every few steps, greeting reporters with friendly pats on the back and warm hellos.

“That was a great speech, son.” He slaps me on the back, and to the fading crowd, I’m sure it looks like he’s proud of me.

“It should be, your people wrote it.” The room empties quickly, and the proud look on my father’s face falls.

“The last question almost got you, Beau. Didn’t I warn you about the girl?”

“That last question was Betty forgetting she works for a reputable newspaper, and not a gossip magazine.”

“What do you expect, son? We live in a small town. People talk, and rumors spread quickly. Lose the girl. She’s not good for you, or the campaign.”

“If people in this town are so interested in who I have lunch with, then I suggest they all get a hobby. There are way more pressing issues in Savannah for everyone to worry about.”

“That’s not how it works, Beau. If you want to win, you have to give the people what they want, and what they want is you.”

“Well, what I want is for everyone to stay out of my personal business, especially you.”

“You’re my son. It’s my job to look out for you.”

“Well, stop! I already told you, I don’t need your help. I won’t warn you again.”

His angry face turns red with my words, and I’m seething as I turn my back on him and walk away. The fact that he’s adamant about me not seeing Scarlett concerns me. He’s never given a fuck about who I dated, and I have a sneaking suspicion he’s trying to cover up his tracks. His attitude toward her only fuels my need to protect her from whatever secrets they’re both hiding.
